Tunisia’s coastguard has recovered 11 bodies after a boat carrying migrants to Italy sank off the coast, with three people still missing.

The National Guard said on Sunday that coastguard, military and civil protection teams were continuing the search for the missing migrants, supported by two helicopters.

The boat left Tunisia early Thursday carrying 15 mostly young people before sinking during the journey.

Rescuers have rescued only one person alive so far. The survivor told rescuers he drifted at sea for about 48 hours before a commercial vessel picked him up.

According to the head of the Tunisian Observatory for Human Rights, seven members of the same family were among those on board, while another passenger was travelling with his pregnant wife.

All the migrants were from Ben Guerdane in southeastern Tunisia.

Dozens of young people gathered in the border town on Saturday night to demand faster search operations. Police used tear gas to disperse the protesters.

The central Mediterranean route from North Africa to Europe remains one of the world’s deadliest migration routes, with migrants from Africa and the Middle East often relying on overcrowded or unsafe boats.

The latest tragedy has also renewed concerns over Tunisia’s migration policies and its cooperation with the European Union.

Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and other humanitarian groups said last month that the EU-Tunisia migration agreement had contributed to serious abuses against migrants and asylum seekers.

The groups called on the EU to suspend funding for migration and border-control activities involving Tunisian security forces.
