Iran and Türkiye have agreed to collaborate on building a new joint railway, intended to be a vital transportation link between Asia and Europe.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed the agreement.
The planned route, officially named the Marand–Cheshmeh Soraya railway transit line in Iran, will connect to Türkiye’s Aralik border area, covering approximately 200 kilometres (120 miles).
Iranian officials estimate the project will cost about $1.6 billion and take between three and four years to complete.
The railway’s strategic importance lies in its role as a southern section of the historic Silk Road.
Iran’s transport minister noted that it would establish an “all-rail corridor”, ensuring continuous network connectivity between China and Europe, facilitating fast and cost-effective cargo transport.

During a joint conference, both foreign ministers emphasised the need to eliminate trade and investment barriers, highlighting the importance of quickly beginning construction on this crucial regional rail connection.
This initiative aligns with Iran’s broader strategy to boost trade with neighbours and revitalise its economy amidst long-standing international sanctions.
The project is also seen as supporting China’s larger Belt and Road Initiative, which aims to develop global trade infrastructure.
