Severe flooding and landslides across several parts of Asia, including Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, have resulted in a death toll exceeding 1,000 people.

The disaster, caused by separate, extreme, extended rainfall events exacerbated by climate change, has forced military deployments to aid survivors in the hardest-hit regions.

Indonesia reported at least 502 fatalities and over 500 missing, marking its deadliest natural disaster since 2018.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka, battered by Cyclone Ditwah, confirmed at least 340 deaths.

The government has called for international aid and declared a state of emergency, describing the event as the nation’s largest and most challenging disaster since the 2004 tsunami.

Thailand also reported 176 deaths, leading to public criticism of the relief efforts.
