Tanzanian President Defends Lethal Force

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan defended the lethal use of force against demonstrators following the recent disputed election, stating it was necessary to prevent a government overthrow.

Opposition and rights groups claim that over 1,000 people were killed during three days of unrest related to the October 29 vote, which they allege was rigged.

Hassan also criticised the European Union for threatening to suspend aid, accusing it of maintaining a colonial mindset.

The opposition, including the main party Chadema, has reported a sustained campaign of violence and abductions targeting critics and is calling for new protests.
