Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has ordered the immediate dissolution of landing site committees on all lakes in the country, saying their activities have caused problems among fishermen.

Colonel Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information, in a statement on Friday, disclosed that Museveni directed the Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Adviser for Special Operations, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, to dissolve the committees “on account of the controversies surrounding them among the fishermen.”

“The President and Commander-In-Chief of the UPDF, General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has directed the Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations (CDF/SPASO), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, to immediately dissolve landing sites committees on all the lakes in Uganda on account of the controversies surrounding them among the fishermen,” Magezi said.

Magezi added that the dissolved committees would be replaced by new ones made up of “indigenous fishing communities and investor representatives”.

According to Magezi, Deputy Chief of Defence Forces and Inspector General, Lieutenant General Sam Okiding and Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security Major General Richard Otto have been tasked with overseeing the formation of the new committees, a process expected to be completed within three months.

Magezi also announced a restructuring of the Fisheries Protection Unit.

“The Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) is hereby renamed the 155 Marines Battalion and will work under the command and administration of the UPDF Marines Brigade,” he said.

He added that Major Joseph Ssebukeera had been appointed commanding officer of the new battalion, while Brigadier Micheal Nyarwa remains commander of the UPDF Marines Brigade.

Magezi noted that Lieutenant Colonel Mercy Tukahirwa, the outgoing commander of the FPU, had been reassigned to the office of the Senior Presidential Adviser on Defence and Security, Lieutenant General (retired) Proscovia Nalweyiso.

“We thank Lieutenant Colonel Tukahirwa for successfully concluding her tour of duty as the outgoing commander of the FPU.”
