A devastating fire at a popular luxury bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana has left approximately 40 people dead and over 100 injured.
The tragedy occurred during New Year’s Eve celebrations at the Le Constellation bar, which was crowded with young revellers, mostly aged between 15 and 20.
Incident Details
Witnesses reported that the fire ignited around 1:30 AM on New Year’s Day. Survivors described a scene of absolute panic as the ceiling caught fire within seconds, allegedly sparked by “birthday candles” on champagne bottles.
Patrons were seen desperately smashing windows with chairs to escape the inferno.
While a large explosion was heard, authorities believe it was a result of the fire rather than the cause, and they have ruled out a terrorist attack.

Response and Casualties
Swiss President Guy Parmelin described the event as one of the worst tragedies in the country’s history.
The local medical infrastructure in the Wallis canton was quickly overwhelmed, forcing the transport of victims—many with severe burns—to hospitals in Zurich, Lausanne, and Geneva.
Given the international popularity of the resort, which is scheduled to host the Ski World Cup later this month, many victims are expected to be foreign nationals.
Reports indicate that several Italians and French citizens are among the dead, injured, or missing.
Authorities are currently working to identify the victims and provide support to their families.
