Poland said on Friday that it had offered specialised medical treatment as overstretched Swiss burn units transferred victims of a New Year’s Eve fire at a ski resort to neighbouring countries.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on X that, at Switzerland’s request, Poland stood ready to treat 14 injured people in Polish hospitals.

He hinted that Switzerland and the canton of Valais could rely on Polish solidarity.

On Thursday, Swiss authorities moved patients to hospitals in Germany, Italy, and France after local emergency units reached capacity.

A spokeswoman for Poland’s interior ministry said the offer included four intensive care beds and 10 beds for patients with less serious injuries.

The beds are located at Siemianowice Śląskie Hospital in southern Poland, which specialises in treating burns and chronic wounds.

Poland also proposed sending two medics to Switzerland and providing an aircraft to transport the 14 injured patients to the Polish facility.
