A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has scheduled January 19, 2026, for the hearing of a defamation suit filed by Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule against Professor Zachary Gundu, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mkar, Gboko, Benue State.

Justice Hamza Muazu adjourned the matter after counsel to the governor requested additional time to respond to three pending applications submitted by the defendant.

Governor Sule is claiming ₦100.5 billion in damages, alleging that Professor Gundu made defamatory remarks accusing him of harbouring Fulani herdsmen who allegedly carried out attacks on communities in Benue State. The statements were reportedly made on July 10, 2025.

During the proceedings, defence counsel Sebastine Hon, SAN, opposed the adjournment, arguing that the claimant had ample time to respond, as the applications had been on record since November last year. He also informed the court of his intention to withdraw two of the pending applications in order to remove procedural hurdles and allow the substantive case to proceed.

After listening to submissions from both sides, Justice Muazu adjourned the case to January for the hearing of the main suit.
