Yemen’s Top Envoy Appointed Prime Minister

Yemen’s prime minister, Salim Saleh BinBuriek, has resigned and has been replaced by his foreign minister, Dr Shaya Mohsen Zindani, the country’s Saudi-backed presidential body announced.

According to the official SABA news agency, BinBuriek met with Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi and submitted the government’s resignation to pave the way for a new administration. The council confirmed that Zindani had been tasked with forming the new government.

The presidential statement said the resignation was part of efforts to restore state institutions, strengthen the unity of sovereign decision-making, and defeat a recent coup attempt.

BinBuriek’s government had previously been split between United Arab Emirates (UAE)- and Saudi-backed figures, but a recent purge dismissed ministers aligned with the UAE, consolidating Saudi influence over the internationally recognised government.

The current government will continue managing day-to-day affairs, excluding appointments and dismissals, until the new cabinet is formed.

The changes come after weeks of tension between Gulf allies Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, following a failed attempt by Abu Dhabi-backed insurgents to seize much of southern Yemen.

The offensive was rolled back by Saudi-led strikes and allied ground forces, prompting the UAE to withdraw its troops before Riyadh moved to strengthen its control over the government.
