The Nigerian Senate has constituted a seven-member committee to collate, harmonise, and synthesise lawmakers’ opinions on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026, and submit a consolidated report to the chamber next Tuesday.

The decision came after over two hours of deliberations on the bill’s provisions during a closed-door session.

The committee is chaired by Senator Niyi Adegbomore, who heads the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters.

Other members are Senators Adamu Aliero, Aminu Tambuwal, Adams Oshiomhole, Danjuma Goje, Tony Nwoye, and Titus Zam.

The Senate has given the panel three days to complete its task and present its report for consideration at the next plenary sitting.

Earlier on Thursday, the upper chamber commenced consideration of the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill 2026 and moved into a closed session to examine documents submitted by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, Senator Simon Lalong.

The closed session allowed lawmakers to closely review the proposed amendments and accompanying documents ahead of further debate. This followed the Senate’s decision on Wednesday to defer consideration of the bill to enable thorough preparation.

Although the House of Representatives has already passed the legislation, Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasised the need for scrutiny, given its importance to the electoral process.

He noted that a clause-by-clause assessment indicates the bill would strengthen electoral integrity, enhance transparency, and boost public confidence.
