Burkina Faso‘s junta leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore, announced on Thursday that it plans to dissolve all political parties, whose activities have been suspended since the military rulers seized power.

Traore took over in a September 2022 coup after unseating another junta and has since sharply silenced opposition.

Parties were previously banned from holding public gatherings but still allowed to operate internally.

In a readout of a cabinet meeting, the presidency said that “the government believes that the proliferation of political parties has led to abuses, fuelled divisions among citizens, and weakened the social fabric.”

Territorial Administration Minister Emile Zerbo also stated that the draft law dissolving political parties will be sent to the Transitional Legislative Assembly.

He hinted that the assets of the dissolved parties would be transferred to the state.

According to him, the decision aims to preserve national unity, strengthen the coherence of government action, and pave the way for reforming political governance.

Traore’s 2022 coup ousted Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, who had taken power only nine months earlier.
