At least six people were killed on Monday after a lone truck crashed along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near Foursquare Camp in Ogun State.

The accident involved a DAF CF 380 trailer painted white and blue with registration number SNA 287 XA.

Twenty-three other people were injured, while more than 20 cows were killed in the crash.

The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident in a statement by its spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole.

According to Odunsi-Oyewole, the crash occurred at about 11:27 a.m., and FRSC rescue officials arrived at the scene within two minutes.

“A total of 29 persons were involved. Twenty-three persons were injured, while six persons were killed,” Odunsi-Oyewole said.

According to Odunsi-Oyewole, the truck was carrying both people and cattle, which is against FRSC policy.

“This was a case of mixed loading of cattle and passengers. FRSC discourages this practice because there is no segregation between goods and humans. In the event of a crash, it is difficult to separate humans from goods, which may eventually lead to loss of lives,” he added.

The injured victims and the bodies of those who died were taken to Oreoluwa Hospital at the GOFAMINT Camp, Ogunmakin, and Victory Hospital in Ogere.

The FRSC said investigations are ongoing to determine the mechanical and other factors that caused the crash.

Meanwhile, the agency urged motorists to ensure regular vehicle inspection and maintenance, especially for heavy-duty trucks, to obey speed limits, and to avoid driving while fatigued.

It also urged drivers to strictly follow road safety regulations, including getting adequate rest and avoiding fatigue to prevent similar accidents.
