The United States accused China on Friday of conducting secret nuclear explosive tests in violation of international agreements.
Speaking at the UN Conference on Disarmament, the U.S. Under Secretary of State Thomas DiNanno revealed that the government has evidence of tests with yields reaching hundreds of tonnes, including a specific event on June 22, 2020.
The administration alleges that the People’s Liberation Army used “decoupling” techniques—methods designed to dampen seismic signals—to hide these explosions from global monitoring systems.
These accusations escalate previous hints made by President Donald Trump, who recently suggested the U.S. might resume its own nuclear testing to maintain parity with Beijing and Moscow.

This disclosure coincides with a new U.S. proposal for a trilateral arms control deal involving Russia and China.
The push for a three-way agreement follows the expiration of the New START treaty on Thursday, the last remaining nuclear limit between Washington and Moscow.
However, China has already declined to participate in disarmament talks at this time.
