Pope Leo XIV has expressed sorrow over recent attacks in Nigeria that have resulted in the loss of lives across several communities.

In a message posted on X, the Pope said he received news of the attacks “with sorrow and concern.”

“It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria leading to a heavy loss of life,” he wrote.

Pope Leo XIV said he was offering prayers for those affected, adding, “I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism.”

He also called on authorities to intensify efforts to protect citizens.

I likewise hope that the competent authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen. #PrayTogether,” the Pope said.

Nigeria has faced ongoing security problems in different parts of the country, including attacks on communities by armed groups, banditry, kidnappings and communal clashes.
