The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has explained when it can step in to handle air travel complaints, following questions from the public over a recent incident at an airport in Ghana.

NCAA Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection Michael Achimugu stated in a post on Sunday that the organisation can only address complaints about flights to or from Nigeria.

“To activate the NCAA in your air travel complaint, your flight must have operated out of Nigeria, into Nigeria, or transit through Nigeria,” Achimugu wrote on X.

Achimugu added that “It does not matter your country of origin as a passenger. You could be Nigerian, Spanish, American, Arabian, etc.”

He said the NCAA has no power to act if a flight has no link to Nigeria, even if the passenger is Nigerian.

“Even if you are Nigerian, if your flight did not originate from Nigeria, terminate in Nigeria, or transit through Nigeria, the NCAA Regulations do not apply, and so the Authority does not have jurisdiction,” he said.

According to him, the clarification was given because many people contacted the agency over a viral incident at the Ghana airport.

“This information is for everybody who reached out over the viral Ghana airport incident, and everyone else,” he said.

Achimugu added that civil aviation operates by regulations and international conventions.
