German authorities have discovered the mummified body of a woman over 100 years old in her Bavarian home, where she had been living with her 82-year-old daughter, according to Bild newspaper on Monday.
Police suspect the daughter, identified as Christa B., may have concealed her mother’s death to continue collecting her monthly pension of around 1,500 euros ($1,780).
The case came to light after the mayor of the small town of Ruhmannsfelden, Werner Troiber, reported concerns.
Troiber had attempted to visit Sophie B., born in 1922, each year to congratulate her on her birthday, but was repeatedly turned away or given excuses by the daughter.

He then notified the public prosecutor in late 2025 after Christa B. told him that her mother had died two years earlier in the Czech Republic.
Police located the mummified remains in early February. An autopsy was conducted, but authorities could not determine the exact cause or date of death, other than confirming it occurred several years ago.
While homicide has been ruled out, investigators have launched a probe into possible pension fraud.
