Nigerians have demanded justice after a resident of Ogun State detailed her harrowing experience of how a stranger, whose advances she had turned down, sexually assaulted her in her home.

In a video shared on Monday, the survivor, who identifies as Mirabel, said she was contemplating suicide after a stranger broke into her house, tied her up, and sexually assaulted her.

“I got r@ped yesterday in my apartment, February 15, in the morning. I have insomnia; if I’m not drunk or high, I can’t sleep. So, on Saturday, I drank, and it wasn’t working. I needed to be high enough so I could sleep. My eyes were tired, but I couldn’t sleep. I slept around 6 am,” she narrated.

“Immediately I opened the door, I got pushed back. Before I get to my door, there is my fridge, and a few steps forward, there is my door. I hit my head on the door because I got pushed back. I hit my head on the fridge, and I passed out.

“On opening my eyes, there is a man over me, there is cloth stuffed in my mouth, and tied. I was just there, mumbling, maybe somebody could hear me. But it was Sunday. Most people would have gone to church. Most of them go to church. They might have been the ones to faintly hear me mumbling.

“When I felt like it had been over 20 minutes, I was just shaking and mumbling, because there was nothing I could do. I didn’t even know this person to begin with. I just stayed there. Then later on, he left, and I was bleeding. I didn’t know why I was bleeding. I thought I got my period.”

She added that she received a text from her rapist telling her not to seek justice because “his father is rich and would bury the case”.

In the screenshots of the texts sent by the culprit shared by Mirabel, the rapist said that they had met on two occasions, but she kept ignoring him.

“I know you are smart, and you will definitely figure out who I am. But let me tell you, my father has the money to bury the case right before it gets to court, so don’t bother. Besides, you can’t find me, and you don’t even have the money to, considering your situation. You are eating from hand to mouth, and you are living on the edge of life. Keep the little money to feed,” the text message read in part.

The tragic story has sparked public outcry on social media platforms, including X, as Nigerians demand justice for the survivor and call on law enforcement agencies to act swiftly.

One X user called on the Ministry of Women Affairs to address the rampant sexual and gender-based violence cases across the country.

“And what is the Ministry of Women Affairs doing about the rampant GBV going on in Nigeria?? Everyday I open this app, I see about different rape cases involving adult women and even minors @hm_womenaffairs girl do your job and safeguard the lives of Nigerian women!!!,” the X user wrote.

In a post shared on X, the Lagos State Domestic Violence Agency (DSVA) noted that it is making efforts to reach the survivor to offer immediate support and appropriate intervention, and to ascertain the survivor’s location.

“Our team has initiated contact through available channels and will continue efforts to establish communication. If anyone has credible information that can assist us in reaching her directly and safely, please contact the Agency by sending us a DM on any of our official social media channels,” the post read in part.

Mirabel’s case is the second rape case to be reported in the news within three days. A 23-year-old man, Abidemi Emmanuel, was arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly sexually assaulting a popular content creator known as Fems Thrift and her friend.
