The son of the former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, Bellarmine Mugabe, who was arrested on Thursday, has been charged with attempted murder.

The 28-year-old last son of the former Zimbabwean President, was arrested in Johannesburg, South Africa, following an alleged shooting incident involving a 23-year-old security guard in the Hyde Park area, north of the city.

The police reportedly found bullet cartridges while searching the area after the shooting, but found no firearm.

Bellarmine was charged in court alongside his bodyguard on Monday and is facing three charges, including attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice, which relates to the missing firearm. The prosecutor, Lufuno Maphiri, told the court on Monday that they suspected Bellarmine and his co-accused concealed the firearm

The security guard who was admitted to the hospital following the incident was still there at press time. 

Guateng police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, said the shooting happened after an altercation.

“Two men, aged 28 and 33, including Mr Mugabe, were taken in for questioning.The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage and investigations are under way,” said Nevhuhulwi.

His case was postponed until March 3. 

This arrest comes two years after he was arrested for violent conduct in Beitbridge, where he allegedly assaulted a policeman at a roadblock at Bubi, 80 kilometres north of the border town, in 2024.
