The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of six church worshippers. The abducted victims were kidnapped from the Celestial Church located along the Uso/Owo Expressway in the Owo Local Government Area of the state at approximately 12:50 a.m. on Tuesday.

The Ondo State Police Command is yet to ascertain the whereabouts of the abductees and the kidnappers. The command spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, said that police operatives swung into action as soon as they heard the report of the abduction.

“Upon receiving the report, the operatives of the command, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups, immediately mobilised to the scene and commenced coordinated rescue operations. As a result of sustained joint efforts, one of the kidnapped victims has been successfully rescued,” said Jimoh.

“Additionally, one suspected informant linked to the incident has been arrested and is currently assisting with ongoing investigations. Security operations are ongoing to ensure the safe rescue of the remaining victims and the apprehension of all perpetrators involved.”

Owo in Ondo State is slowly becoming a hotbed of violence as bandits continue to launch unprecedented attacks and wreak havoc in the community.

One major attack recorded in the area was the mass shooting and bomb attack at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo during a Pentecost Sunday service on June 5, 2022. Several suspects believed to be linked to terror groups were charged and arrested in connection with this attack in a federal high court in Abuja.

In December, bandits attacked a police station in the Ipele-Owo community in the Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State. The incident occurred at a time when Christians were preparing to attend crossover services at church.
