Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said the country’s security challenge should not be portrayed as a religious war, insisting that terrorists and criminal groups target Nigerians of all faiths.
In a post on X on Thursday, Idris said Nigerians must continue to stand united against those who seek to divide the country along religious lines.
“We must continue to resist those who seek to portray Nigeria’s security challenge as a religious war. It is not a religious war,” Idris said.
“The terrorists and criminal groups who carry out attacks against Nigerians do so targeting all faiths, and we must continue to stand united against them.”
Idris said the administration of President Bola Tinubu would not relent in its efforts to protect Nigerians of all faiths, through strengthened security coordination, improved intelligence gathering, and prioritising the welfare and morale of the armed forces and other security agencies.
“The Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will not relent in its efforts to protect Nigerians of all faiths, by strengthening security coordination, improving intelligence gathering, and prioritising the welfare and morale of our Armed Forces and other security agencies,” he said.
The minister pointed to recent security gains, including the elimination of hundreds of terrorists and bandits and the rescue of abducted citizens in different parts of the country, as evidence of the government’s determination to defeat what he described as enemies of the country.
“Recent successes bear witness to this determination to defeat all the enemies of our country, from the elimination of hundreds of terrorists and bandits to the rescue of abducted citizens in different parts of the country,” Idris said.
“We will not be divided, and we will never be defeated,” he added.
