The United States Department of State has issued a security alert warning of a potential threat to American facilities and schools in Nigeria, urging US citizens to take precautionary measures.

In a notice released Monday, the United States Embassy in Abuja advised Americans in the country to remain vigilant following information about a possible terrorist threat targeting US-linked locations.

The embassy encouraged US citizens to stay alert to their surroundings, avoid predictable routines, and review security precautions with family members to reduce potential risks.

“The US embassy in Abuja informs US citizens of a possible terrorist threat against US facilities and US-affiliated schools in Nigeria,” it said in a notice.

“Increasing awareness of your surroundings, avoiding predictable routines, and reviewing general security precautions with your family can help reduce your risk,” it said.

Officials did not provide details about the source of the threat.

The advisory comes months after US President Donald Trump ordered airstrikes in Nigeria on Christmas Day, saying the operation was aimed at jihadist groups.

Trump had earlier argued that Christians were facing persecution in Nigeria, an assessment that has been disputed in the country, where violence has affected both Christian and Muslim communities.

The warning also follows a broader global security alert issued by the United States after Washington and Israel carried out strikes on Iran.

Tehran has since responded with missile and drone attacks against countries aligned with the US in the region.
