Bayern Munich secured a near-certain spot in the Champions League quarter-finals following a dominant 6-1 victory over Atalanta in Bergamo on Tuesday night.

Despite starting star players Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala on the bench, Vincent Kompany’s side overwhelmed the hosts with a relentless offensive display.

Michael Olise was the standout performer, netting a brilliant brace, while Josip Stanisic, Serge Gnabry, Nicolas Jackson, and Musiala each added to the lopsided scoreline.

The match was effectively decided in the first half as Bayern raced to a 3-0 lead by the 25th minute.

While Atalanta managed a late consolation goal through Mario Pasalic in stoppage time, the Italian side was largely unable to cope with Bayern’s high-intensity pressing and clinical finishing.

The victory puts the German giants in a commanding position ahead of the second leg in Munich next week, where they are expected to finalise their progression to a potential blockbuster tie against either Real Madrid or Manchester City.

The night was not entirely celebratory for Bayern, however, as defender Alphonso Davies was forced off with a hamstring injury shortly after coming on as a substitute.

Despite the injury concern, Kompany expressed immense pride in his squad’s depth and quality, noting that the performance was exactly what the team had prepared for.

For Atalanta, the defeat likely marks the end of their European campaign, potentially leaving Italy without any remaining representatives in the competition this season.
