Explosions were heard on Saturday in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, according to AFP journalists on the ground.

The source of the loud blasts was not immediately known. Witnesses said they saw smoke rising from an area in the centre of the city following the explosions.

Authorities had not yet confirmed the cause of the incident at the time of reporting.
