Former France international Dimitri Payet has announced his retirement from professional football.

The ex-West Ham midfielder confirmed his decision during a live television interview in France, saying he would be stepping away from the game just days before turning 39.

“Today, a few days before my 39th birthday, I am retiring as a professional footballer.

“It’s raining today, and that’s no coincidence.”

Payet, who gained widespread recognition during his time in the Premier League, was known for his creativity, dribbling ability and set-piece expertise.

He scored 15 goals and provided 22 assists in 60 appearances for West Ham United between 2015 and 2017.

The midfielder also played for several clubs in France, including Saint-Étienne, Nantes, Lille and Marseille, as well as Brazilian side Vasco da Gama.

He said he decided to retire because he no longer wanted to be involved in a project where he could not give his full commitment.

Payet, who earned 38 caps for France and was part of the squad that reached the final of Euro 2016, became emotional while announcing his decision.

He had been without a club since leaving Vasco da Gama in July last year.

His time in Brazil was overshadowed by off-field controversy after a woman accused him of physical and psychological abuse, allegations he denied while admitting to an extramarital relationship.

The case is expected to go to trial in Brazil.
