A tricycle operator and his female passenger have died in a road accident at the “Sign Board” junction near Ubani Market in Umuahia, Abia State, on Tuesday.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state, Mrs Ngozi Ezeoma, confirmed the incident, describing it as “tragic and sad.”
She said the crash occurred just hours after another fatal accident on Opobo Road in Aba, where a motorcycle rider was hit by a tricycle and subsequently crushed by a truck, while the tricycle rider reportedly fled the scene.
Ezeoma noted that the latest incident marked the third fatal crash recorded at the “Sign Board” junction in 2025, raising concerns over recurring accidents in the area.

She called on motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, warning against speeding and reckless driving, especially at high-risk junctions.
“I reiterated our call on motorists and all road users in the state to strictly obey traffic rules and regulations to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
“We urged drivers, especially those of heavy-duty vehicles and tricycles, to exercise caution, avoid overspeeding, and be more careful at dangerous junctions.
According to her, the bodies of the deceased have been deposited in a mortuary in Umuahia, while efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing truck driver.
An eyewitness, identified simply as Uche, said the accident occurred on Tuesday evening when a speeding truck rammed into the tricycle along the Umuahia-Ubani-Uzuakoli Road.
He said the impact pushed the tricycle under the truck, killing both occupants instantly. The eyewitness added that the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the crash.
