Iran has confirmed the death of Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the naval arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, following an Israeli airstrike, marking another escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two nations.
According to Iranian state-linked media, the senior military officer died from injuries sustained in an attack carried out last week.
A statement published by Sepah News said Tangsiri “succumbed to severe injuries” after the strike, confirming earlier claims by Israeli officials.
Israel Katz, Israel’s Defence Minister, had announced days earlier that Israeli forces targeted and killed the commander, describing him as “the man who was directly responsible for the terrorist operation of mining and blocking the Strait of Hormuz.”
The killing comes at a time of heightened tensions, with Iran accused of enforcing a de facto blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes. The disruption has contributed to rising global energy prices, as concerns grow over supply instability.

Iranian authorities stated that Tangsiri was overseeing coastal defence operations when he was struck. The Guards vowed retaliation, declaring they “will not rest until the enemy is completely destroyed,” signalling the potential for further military escalation.
Tangsiri had previously pledged in March to “deliver the harshest blows to the aggressor enemy” while maintaining efforts to shut down the strategic waterway.
A veteran of the Iran-Iraq war, he was among the longest-serving and most recognisable figures within the Guards. Ali Khamenei appointed him to lead the naval forces in 2018.
His death adds to a growing list of high-profile Iranian casualties since the conflict began. Tehran has also confirmed the deaths of senior figures, including Khamenei himself and security chief Ali Larijani, alongside several other top officials.
While Israel and the United States maintain that these targeted strikes have significantly weakened Iran’s military leadership, some analysts argue that the country continues to demonstrate resilience, maintaining operational capacity despite mounting losses.
