Nigerian troops under Operation Hadin Kai successfully thwarted a mass abduction attempt by Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists on Monday.
The encounter occurred along the Buratai–Kamuya axis in Borno State while soldiers were escorting a convoy of 17 civilian vehicles.
According to Lt Col Sani Uba, the media officer for the Northeast Joint Taskforce, the insurgents attempted to force the travellers into the bush before being decisively engaged by the military.
Following a swift and coordinated response by the Quick Reaction Force, the terrorists were forced to retreat toward the Mangari area, abandoning all their captives and vehicles.
Over 150 civilians, including men, women, and children, were rescued and safely transported to Buratai to be reunited with their families.
The operation highlighted the military’s high state of vigilance and its commitment to protecting vulnerable populations as the Easter period approaches.
Despite the successful rescue, the mission came at a cost.
During the pursuit of the fleeing insurgents, five soldiers sustained severe injuries when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device (IED) along the Bula Zarma-Mangari route.
The wounded personnel were promptly evacuated for specialist medical care.
The Military High Command has since commended the troops for their gallantry and urged them to maintain aggressive pressure on terrorist elements across the region.
