United States Senator Ted Cruz has warned that Washington is aware of Nigerian officials allegedly responsible for creating conditions that enable attacks on Christians and has the means to hold them accountable.

Cruz made the statement on Tuesday on X while reacting to the recent attack on the Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

He accused some Nigerian authorities of failing to act decisively against violence targeting Christian communities.

“Nigerian government officials have created an environment in which Christians are routinely persecuted and slaughtered, by imposing sharia law and looking the other way at violence,” Cruz wrote.

“Those officials should know that the U.S. knows who they are, and has the tools to hold them accountable.”

The attack on Angwan Rukuba occurred on March 29, when gunmen stormed the community. Local authorities later confirmed multiple casualties from the incident.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang described the victims as residents who were carrying out their normal activities when the attackers struck in the evening.

Mutfwang said security agencies had apprehended a suspect who previously threatened the peace of the state and vowed that those responsible for the violence would face justice.

“Your pain is my pain, and the pain of Plateau State. My administration will pursue justice relentlessly until the perpetrators are brought to book,” he said in a post on X.

He also announced that the state government would cover the medical bills of injured victims and ensure dignified burials for those killed.
