Panic broke out in parts of Lagos in the early hours of Saturday following a fire at a market in the Yaba area of the state.
The incident reportedly started around 3 a.m., affecting several shops within the market. Eyewitnesses said some goods were destroyed in the blaze.
Videos and posts shared on social media showed thick smoke and flames, while traders and residents attempted to salvage their belongings.
An eyewitness, identified as Lugar Feliz, speaking via a TikTok livestream, said firefighters were already on the scene and noted that the fire occurred in the Popo section of the market.
A user, Clinically firm (@GAnorue17378), wrote: “BREAKING: Yaba Market on fire since yesterday night. Details later.”
Another, Obutexofficial (@Obutex7), said: “Yaba on fire, fire outbreak since 1 am.”

Olamilekan Iyiola (@Olamilekan0932) described the situation as “a terrible fire outbreak in Yaba right now,” while another user, Adeoluwa (@Okunlola_Jude), noted that shops near his property were completely destroyed.
@Okunlola_Jude wrote, “Woke up to the news that yaba is burning, the shops just behind mine completely burnt to ground, billions gone like that.”
“Fire service headquarters is just 10 mins walk from there, they could only bring a truck.”
There was no official statement from the Lagos State Fire Service at the time of reporting, and the extent of the damage is still being assessed.
