The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed all resident electoral commissioners (RECs) to suspend publicity and preparations for the planned voter revalidation exercise.

The exercise was scheduled to begin nationwide on April 13, 2026, with the goal of updating the voter register prior to the 2027 general election.

A letter from INEC secretary Rose Oriaran-Anthony instructed RECs to pause all activities related to the exercise, including personnel deployment and the preparation of INEC voter enrolment devices (IVED).

The voter revalidation exercise was to follow a timeline starting at the local government area (LGA) level from April 13 to May 2, moving to the registration area (RA) level from May 5 to May 11, and concluding at the polling unit (PU) level from May 13 to May 19.

INEC also announced a virtual meeting with RECs, originally scheduled for Thursday, April 9, via Zoom.

The commission advised RECs to remain in their states and await login details, which will be shared once the meeting is set up.

“RECs are also directed to step down all publicity and arrangements for the voter revalidation exercise and await further directives from the commission,” INEC said, expressing regret for any inconvenience caused.
