Wall Street opened with divergent results on Monday as investors struggled to interpret conflicting signals regarding the conflict in the Middle East.

While the White House confirmed it is reviewing a mediated proposal for a 45-day ceasefire with Iran, officials clarified that President Donald Trump has not yet approved the deal and military operations are continuing.

This atmospheric “confusion,” as described by market analysts, kept traders cautious even as news broke of Israeli strikes hitting a major Iranian petrochemical complex.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 0.1% in early trading, while the S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite saw modest gains of 0.2% and 0.4%, respectively.

This session provided the first opportunity for the market to react to Friday’s robust employment data, which showed unexpectedly strong job gains for March.

However, the positive domestic labour news was largely overshadowed by the geopolitical uncertainty and the potential for the war to drive broader economic instability.

Investors are now looking ahead to critical inflation data scheduled for release later this week.

There is growing concern that sustained high energy costs resulting from the regional war could lead to wider pricing pressures, potentially complicating the Federal Reserve’s current stance on interest rates.

While oil prices remained relatively stable on Monday morning, the prospect of a prolonged conflict continues to weigh on long-term market forecasts.
