North Korea has conducted a series of missile and weapon system tests this week, intensifying tensions with South Korea and signalling Pyongyang’s frustration with its neighbour’s attempts at reconciliation.

Over three days, Monday through Wednesday, North Korea tested various systems, including ballistic missiles, cluster bombs, and a mobile short-range anti-aircraft missile, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The North’s military trials involved a range of weapons, notably the Hwasongpho-11 Ka tactical ballistic missile, which KCNA claimed could “reduce to ashes” targets across a 6.5 to 7-hectare area. This missile is tipped with a controversial cluster bomb warhead, which disperses smaller submunitions over a vast area and has been criticised for posing long-term risks to civilian populations.

North Korea also tested an “electromagnetic weapon system” and “carbon fiber sham bombs,” described by KCNA as “special assets of strategic nature.” Additionally, North Korean military officials tested the durability of missile engines using “low-cost materials.”

The launches on Wednesday included multiple short-range ballistic missiles, one of which flew more than 700 kilometres (434 miles). Despite the tests, no photos of the launches have been released, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was notably absent from the proceedings.

This week’s missile tests mark the fourth and fifth known launches by North Korea in 2026, highlighting its growing defiance against South Korea’s diplomatic overtures.

Analysts believe the missile trials reflect Pyongyang’s frustration with Seoul, as North Korea has consistently rejected attempts to repair bilateral relations.
