Spanish airline Iberia has announced it will suspend its flights to Cuba from June through late October, citing worsening operational conditions on the island, including fuel shortages and reduced passenger demand.

The airline said the decision affects only its Cuba route and added that services are expected to resume in November if conditions improve.

Speaking on the development, an Iberia spokesperson explained that the airline is facing significant operational constraints in the Caribbean nation.

“There are many supply problems in Cuba and a lack of demand”, an Iberia spokesman told AFP, saying a resumption of flights would happen “in November, if the conditions improve”.

The situation on the island has been widely linked to a deepening energy crisis, described by multiple reports as being worsened by a de facto United States fuel blockade that has disrupted imports and strained Cuba’s already fragile economy.

Cuba has in recent months faced widespread power shortages, fuel rationing, transport disruptions and a decline in tourism activity, all of which have affected international airline operations to the country.
