The Supreme Court of Nigeria has reserved judgement on the leadership disputes plaguing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
A five-member panel of the court, led by Garba Lawal, sat on Wednesday to hear the party’s case and, after the hearing, announced that a judgement date would be communicated to the parties involved in the leadership dispute through their legal representatives.
The Kabir Turaki-led faction of the party filed an appeal before the Supreme Court to challenge the April 9, 2026, decision of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which invalidated the national convention organised by the faction, held in Ibadan, Oyo State, between November 15 and 16, 2025.
Turaki, dissatisfied with the judgment, appealed to the Supreme Court, seeking a declaration that both lower courts lacked jurisdiction over the matter.
His faction argued that the dispute falls within internal party affairs and insisted that due process was followed in organising the convention.

Lower courts had, however, ruled against the Turaki-led faction and restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising the outcome of the convention and issuing orders affecting access to the party’s national secretariat.

Following Wednesday’s hearing, the party, in a statement, expressed optimism that the apex court will deliver a judgement in its favour.
“We charge all true and uncompromised PDP members to keep their faith alive, in the unwavering hope that the apex court will deliver judgements that will preserve multi-party democracy and prevent the imminent enthronement of a one-party state,” the statement read.
“The Supreme Court has, at several times in the history of our non-linear democratic experience, remained the last hope of Nigeria and Nigerians, even in the face of immense pressure and unimaginable risk.”
