Senator Tony Nwoye has been named the new minority whip of the Senate following the defection of his predecessor and other lawmakers to the All Progressives Congress.
Nwoye, who represents Anambra North, was selected unanimously by the Senate minority caucus to fill the position.
His appointment followed the defection of Senator Osita Ngwu from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC on Wednesday.
Ngwu’s letter, read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, stated that his decision was driven by a wish to align with Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and President Bola Tinubu.
The most stable political platform in Nigeria, according to him, is the APC.

Nwoye was elected to the Senate in 2023 under the Labour Party but moved to the African Democratic Congress in late 2025.
In other developments, Senator Anthony Siyako Yaro of Gombe South also left the PDP for the APC, citing long-standing internal conflicts within his former party.
Senator Aliyu Wadada, who chairs the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, formally announced his switch from the Social Democratic Party to the APC.
Wadada, already endorsed as the APC’s consensus candidate for governor of Nasarawa State in the 2027 elections, said he had joined the APC earlier but only completed the official processes on Wednesday.
