The Malian military announced on Saturday that it is engaged in active combat against unidentified “terrorist groups” following a series of coordinated assaults on army barracks.

The violence erupted early in the morning, targeting several strategic military installations both within the capital city of Bamako and in surrounding regional areas.

Witnesses across the country have reported hearing sustained gunfire in multiple cities, underscoring the scale of the security challenge facing the military-led government.
