Nigerian opposition parties have resolved to field a single presidential candidate in the 2027 general election.
The spokesperson for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, disclosed that the decision was reached at the end of the Opposition Political Parties National Summit held on Saturday, in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
According to Abdullahi, opposition parties have faced threats and challenges that could undermine their chances in the 2027 election. He alleged that these challenges are being orchestrated by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which necessitates a collective approach to contest power.
He added that the opposition would resist any attempts by the APC to impose a one-party state on Nigeria and reject what he described as the imposition of Bola Tinubu as the sole presidential candidate in 2027.

“That despite the onslaughts and manoeuvrings of the ruling party, the APC, to impose President Bola Tinubu as the sole Presidential candidate in 2027, we shall field candidates and contest the 2027 Presidential and other elections,” said Abdullahi.

“That we shall work towards fielding one presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, which shall be agreed and supported by all participating opposition parties to rescue our nation and her long-suffering masses.”
The opposition parties also demanded that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, should not oversee the 2027 elections following allegations of partisanship.
According to the ADC spokesperson, Nigerians have lost confidence in him and his capacity to guarantee credible elections.
“His continuous stay in office is vexatious and capable of triggering wide spread crisis in our nation,” he said.
Other demands by the opposition parties include a review of the 2026 Electoral Act, removing sections that threaten election integrity and conflict with constitutional provisions, the release of opposition politicians facing prosecution, and an extension of the primary deadline until the end of July 2026.
