A military court hearing the case of three dozen officers accused of plotting to overthrow Nigeria’s government will reconvene on May 8, a Defence Headquarters spokesman told AFP on Monday.
The court martial was “inaugurated” last Friday at a military facility in the capital, Abuja, with 36 officers brought before newly appointed justices for the initial session, according to Major General Samaila Uba.
The proceedings are not open to the media.
The next sitting will also be held behind closed doors, Uba confirmed.
If the alleged plot had succeeded, it would have brought an end to more than 25 years of civilian rule in Africa’s most populous nation.
In a separate legal process, six civilians are standing trial this week at the Federal High Court in Abuja for their alleged involvement in the conspiracy.
They have entered not guilty pleas.
