A massacre that left at least 29 people dead in Adamawa state was the work of the Islamic State group, the organisation said Monday in a statement posted on Telegram.
Gunmen struck the Guyaku community in Adamawa state’s Gombi Local Government Area late Sunday, firing for hours and leaving behind widespread destruction and multiple casualties, according to local officials.
The Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) branch claimed its fighters “killed at least 25 … Christians” and set fire to “a church and nearly 100 motorcycles,” the SITE monitoring group reported.
But Adamawa’s governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who visited the scene Monday and confirmed the death toll, placed the blame on Boko Haram militants who have long operated across the region’s rural areas, according to reports.

Calling the assault both tragic and unacceptable, Fintiri said those responsible “will not go unpunished” and promised to step up security operations “immediately to restore peace.”
“My heart breaks for the people of Guyaku in Gombi LGA. Today, I stood on the ground where our brothers and sisters were cruelly taken from us. This act of cowardice is an affront to our humanity and will not go unpunished,” Fintiri said.
“To the bereaved families: Adamawa mourns with you. To the attackers: justice is coming. We are intensifying security operations immediately to restore peace and ensure every resident feels safe in their home again. We will rebuild, and we will remain resilient.”
