Bellarmine and his co-accused had, in February, engaged in a violent brawl with a 23-year-old man believed to be a gardener at Mugabe’s upmarket residence in Hyde Park, Johannesburg and were arrested by the South African Police.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) revealed that the victim of the altercation was allegedly shot in the back while attempting to flee the residence.
The police reportedly found bullet cartridges while searching the area after the shooting, but found no firearm. The 28-year-old was thereafter charged in court and faced three charges, including attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice, which relates to the missing firearm.
He had also been arrested for violent conduct in Beitbridge, a border town between South Africa and Zimbabwe, where he allegedly assaulted a policeman at a roadblock at Bubi, 80 kilometres north of the border town, in 2024.
