At least nine people, including a child, died and several others suffered injuries after a fire broke out at a hotel in Kolkata early Wednesday morning.
Anuj Sharma, the fire services director of West Bengal, confirmed the casualties to reporters.
The blaze sent thick smoke enveloping the building, trapping guests inside.
Rescue workers later discovered some of the victims inside the hotel’s bathrooms as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.
