Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), announcing plans to contest the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat in the 2027 elections.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Yesufu said her decision followed a clearer understanding of the country’s political direction and her continued alignment with former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi.

She explained that this perspective informed her move to the NDC, which she said reflects the vision she believes represents Nigeria’s future.

“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation. This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she wrote.

She noted that her earlier support for Obi had influenced her decision to join the ADC, adding that her latest move was a continuation of that commitment.

“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise I am joining the NDC,” she added.

Yesufu also confirmed that she would be seeking elective office under the NDC, stating that she intends to run for the FCT senatorial seat on the party’s platform.

Reflecting on her time in the ADC, she said she had fulfilled her responsibilities and ensured a smooth transition before leaving.

She expressed appreciation to party members, describing her experience working in various roles within the party as valuable.

“This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she wrote.

“I was fortunate to work with great and amazing people whose goal was a better country. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary at various levels.”

Her defection follows the ongoing shifts within opposition politics, including the recent moves by Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the NDC, which have triggered a wave of exits from the ADC.
