Large crowds have gathered at the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) convention in Abuja as proceedings commence, with former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, and former Bayelsa State Governor Senator Seriake Dickson in attendance.
The inaugural national convention is taking place at the Los Angeles Event Centre, Ahmadu Bello Way, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The party’s National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, announced the convention in a statement issued on Friday through the party’s official X handle.
“The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) welcomes all delegates to its inaugural national convention holding on Saturday, 9th May 2026, at Los Angeles Event Centre, Ahmadu Bello Way, FCT Abuja, by 10 a.m.,” the statement read.

The convention came shortly after a strategic meeting held at the residence of former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, which was also attended by Obi and Dickson.
There are expectations that Obi and Kwankwaso would fly the flag of the NDC in the 2027 general election.
The two former governors recently defected to the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Delegates from across the country were expected to attend the convention, which political analysts say is critical for emerging parties as a platform for ratifying party constitutions, electing national officers, and outlining strategies ahead of future elections.
The NDC joins a growing list of political platforms seeking to establish relevance amid ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s opposition and ruling party structures.
