The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially announced that the party’s 2027 presidential ticket has been zoned to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term, with the ticket reverting to the North in 2031.

The announcement was made during the NDC National Convention in Abuja on Saturday.

The party said its decision is based on the power-sharing formula between the North and the South.

“…relies on the principles of power-sharing and the honourable rotation of the highest office in the land between the Northern and Southern parts of the country,” the party stated.

“Noting the current political exigencies and the collective desire of our party members to provide and present a united front that reflects our moral consistency, we would now therefore be resolved by this convention by mandatory Southern zoning for 2027,” the party said.

“That the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) hereby zones its presidential ticket for the 2027 elections to Southern Nigeria for a single term of four years. Northern reversion in 2031.”

The party added that upon completion of the four-year term in 2031, the presidential ticket “shall automatically and irrevocably rotate to Northern Nigeria.”

“This decision is taken in the supreme interest of national healing, to douse sectional tensions, and to guarantee that the NDC remains for all Nigerians — young and old, men and women,” the party said.
