Reno Omokri, Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, has explained that his airport greeting with former presidential candidate Peter Obi was “in anticipation of President Tinubu’s re-election next year.”

In a 35-second video posted on X, Omokri was seen approaching Obi at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The two men shook hands, and Omokri placed a hand on Obi’s shoulder as they exchanged brief words.

“Peter Obi And I Exchanging Warm Greetings Today At Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport In Anticipation of President Tinubu’s Reelection Next Year!” Omokri captioned the post.

Within hours, the video received hundreds of responses and thousands of views online. While some criticised Omokri for “clout-chasing,” others cited the friendly exchange as an illustration of Nigerian politicians putting aside their online rivalries in person.

Omokri was a vocal critic of Obi during the 2023 campaign and has frequently clashed with his supporters online. Obi had not publicly commented on the meeting as of the time this report was filed.

On Saturday, Omokri and Femi Fani-Kayode, Ambassador-Designate to South Africa, issued a joint statement declaring their support for President Tinubu’s reelection in 2027, arguing that power should remain in the South for two full terms.

“Our candidate for 2027 is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the diplomats declared.
