The Democratic Republic of Congo has requested a new financing arrangement from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), with a technical mission scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks.

This move follows the completion of a previous three-year, $430 million loan programme in March 2025.

The upcoming discussions will focus on establishing a programme tailored to the oil-producing nation’s specific economic goals and reforms.

Following President Denis Sassou Nguesso’s re-election in March, his administration has emphasised a development plan centred on economic diversification and job creation.

The finance ministry stated that the government remains committed to implementing structural reforms to foster inclusive growth.

These efforts aim to stabilise a nation that has long relied on hydrocarbons but is now looking to expand other sectors of its economy.

Despite these plans, the IMF previously noted in April that Congo’s economic outlook remains fragile.

Growth in 2025 stayed below potential due to limited public investment and disruptions in energy supply, which have hampered non-oil industries.

The new mission will evaluate these challenges as the government seeks further international support to strengthen its medium-term prospects.
