Barcelona manager Hansi Flick clarified on Tuesday that forward Lamine Yamal’s decision to wave a Palestinian flag during the club’s title parade was a personal “decision.”

Following the team’s 2-0 victory over Real Madrid to clinch a second straight La Liga title, the 18-year-old was spotted with the flag during Monday’s celebratory bus tour.

Flick admitted to reporters that while he had discussed the matter with the player, he believes individuals must ultimately choose how to express themselves.

Despite acknowledging Yamal’s autonomy, Flick expressed his personal discomfort with the display during a team celebration.

He noted that the squad has a responsibility to focus on the expectations of the fans, which he primarily views as delivering happiness through sport.

The manager emphasised that the emotional reactions of the supporters on the streets were a reminder that the club’s core purpose is footballing excellence and shared joy.

Flick’s remarks highlighted a preference for keeping political gestures separate from the club’s official festivities.

While he confirmed that he spoke to the young international, he refrained from imposing sanctions, citing Yamal’s age and right to make his own choices.

The coach concluded by reiterating that the team’s priority should remain on the pitch to maintain the deep connection they have built with their global fanbase.
