In an unexpected turn of events on Tuesday, lowly TS Galaxy stunned league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns with a thrilling 3-2 victory, making Orlando Pirates the frontrunners for the South African Premiership title for the first time since 2012.
Sundowns, who had been dominating the league, remain on top with 68 points from 30 matches. However, Orlando Pirates are close behind with 65 points and still have two matches left to play. With a superior goal difference, Pirates have a clear advantage as the first tie-breaker in the event of an equal points finish.
Pirates’ upcoming fixtures against mid-table Durban City in Soweto on Saturday and relegation-threatened Orbit College in Rustenburg on May 23 will be crucial. They need all three points from these matches to secure the title.
In a dramatic match at the Mbombela Stadium, Galaxy took an early lead with goals from Victor Letsoalo and Sedwyn George, but Sundowns’ star Colombian striker Brayan Leon quickly responded with a brace before the break. However, just after halftime, 37-year-old defender Mpho Mvelase put Galaxy ahead again, and the team held their ground, fending off Sundowns’ attacks to claim the win.

The result marks the potential end of an eight-year reign for Sundowns, who have won the last nine out of 10 championships. Their dominance, which also saw them win the 2016 CAF Champions League, was expected to continue, especially as they had remained unbeaten in their last 20 league matches.
Despite this defeat, Sundowns’ Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso remained supportive of his players, saying, “My players were tired, and I will not criticise them.”
Galaxy’s caretaker coach, Bernard Parker, expressed immense pride in his team’s performance, highlighting their passion and strategic approach. “I saw lots of passion and belief tonight, and we were first to a lot of loose balls,” said Parker.
With the title now within their grasp, Pirates will be hoping to capitalise on the slip-up from Sundowns and clinch the trophy after years of near misses.
