United States (US) President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for a high-stakes summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping focused on easing tensions between the two global powers.

Trump landed at Beijing Capital International Airport and was welcomed by Chinese officials and hundreds of young people waving Chinese and American flags. Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Nvidia boss Jensen Huang were also part of the delegation, highlighting Trump’s push for stronger business ties with China.

Before arriving in Beijing, Trump said he would urge Xi to “open up” China more to American businesses. He expressed hope that both countries could expand economic cooperation despite ongoing disagreements.

Trump and Xi are expected to discuss several major issues during the summit, including the Iran war, trade tensions, Taiwan, artificial intelligence (AI), and export controls. The visit marks the first trip to China by a US president in nearly 10 years. Trump is expected to attend a state banquet and other official events during the two-day visit.

Trade remains one of the biggest topics on the agenda after both countries imposed heavy tariffs on each other last year. The leaders are expected to discuss extending a temporary trade truce reached in South Korea last October.

China also signalled a positive tone ahead of the meeting, with the foreign ministry saying Beijing welcomes Trump’s visit and is ready to cooperate with the United States while managing differences. Security was tightened across Beijing ahead of the summit, with police increasing checks in major areas of the city.
