Former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Enugu State after winning the party’s primary election.
He polled 7,424 votes to defeat his closest rival, Samson Nnamani, who got 600 votes. The primary election was conducted by the state’s gubernatorial committee chairman, Hon. Austin Nwachukwu, in Enugu.
In his acceptance speech, Nnaji thanked party members for giving him the ticket and promised not to disappoint them. He said his focus would be on reducing hardship in Enugu State and ensuring residents are not overburdened by taxes.
“I give this victory to the glory of God and to the people of Enugu, who have been oppressed in the last three years and overburdened with excessive and obnoxious taxes,” he said.

He added that his government will support ordinary citizens rather than place more pressure on them.
“Landlords are paying through their nose, hoteliers are crying, commercial motorcyclists (okada riders) are almost out of existence, and even people carrying water on their heads are taxed,” he stated.
Nnaji explained that his goal is to rebuild and industrialise the state to create jobs and reduce youth restiveness. He also criticised the current administration, saying past industries in the state were not being properly managed.
“We will build industries to create jobs for our people. Jim Nwobodo is the only governor in this state that built industries, and those industries are now being appropriated by the current administration. That will not continue in Enugu State,” he said.
The former minister further promised to serve only one term if elected governor, saying his priority is impact, not long stay in office.
